The Position:
The Learning Support teacher works collaboratively with students, their families, and the Upper School Student Support Team and Faculty, supporting students to be self-directed learners and strong self advocates. The Learning Support teacher is responsible for creating and implementing strategies for a diverse range of learners, including those with mild to moderate learning needs.
Responsibilities:
- Teaches learning support classes where an important focus is coaching students to develop their executive functioning skills, advocacy and self-directedness
- Acts as a contributing member of the Student Support Team and Level 2 and 3 interventions as described by our MLSS
- Collaborates with students and families to develop student Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
- Acts as the primary IEP case manager for a grade level
- Supports students to access their accommodations
- Supports teachers and curriculum area teams to differentiate curriculum using a Universal Design approach
- Supports teachers to implement accommodations and differentiation within the classroom
- Meets with parents, teachers, and specialists to review student progress and goals
- Coordinates with external specialists (educational psychologists, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, reading specialists, etc.)
- Keeps up-to-date on curriculum developments and trends in the field
- Provides professional development to classroom teachers in the areas of Universal Design for Learning, differentiation, and in specific learning disabilities
- Advocates for neurodiversity and helps make ZIS a place where students with differences belong
Desired qualifications:
- Masters in Special Education, or equivalent
- Experience with inclusive high school programs
- Experience developing and implementing IEPs
- A commitment to relationship building with students and colleagues
- A commitment and passion for celebrating neurodiversity
- A commitment to teamwork, collaboration, and active participation in school life
- Experience with cognitive coaching and/or coaching students to develop executive functioning skills
- Experience with common educational and screening assessments
- Experience with assistive technologies and 1:1 device programs
